Ranjith Udawatta, Ph.D.

Associate Research Professor
Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences

Education

  • Ph.D. 1994, University of Missouri-Columbia

Research

  • Water quality, Agroforestry, Watershed management

Research Description

Udawatta's primary research objective is to quantify environmental benefits of agroforestry and prairie restoration. He conducts research on influences of agroforestry and grass buffers on water and soil quality. In addressing this issue he examines how trees and grass buffers change surface and subsurface water quality by reducing runoff, nutrients and sediment when intercropped in row crop agriculture. Changes in soil physical properties, pore characteristics, competition among vegetation types, root density, and soil water dynamics are being evaluated in an agroforestry alley cropping practice. Soil carbon sequestration and microclimatic differences as influenced by permanent vegetation are other research areas.
