Sporting clays

The School of Natural Resources Alumni Board raised almost $600 for student scholarships during the First School of Natural Resources Sporting Clays Tournament.

Despite the rainy weather at Cedar Creek Rod and Gun Club outside Columbia, more than 25 alumni, staff and students participated.

Nearly 550 clay birds broke against flying columns of shot from 15 shooters. About 200 more hit the forest floor.

The tournament also featured a silent auction and raffle drawings, as well as a fried-turkey lunch.

The silent auction, featuring items donated from local photographers, craftspeople and businesses, raised most of the scholarship dollars.

"It seemed like the Missouri products basket was popular," said Laura Hertel, coordinator of Student Services for SNR. "I know that they were all interested in Glenn's picture of the geese."

Shooters were divided into three categories: rookie, amateur and pro, based on their previous shooting experience, Hertel said. There weren't any first-time shooters, but many were new to sporting clays.

Glenn Chambers earned the highest score during the shoot

Glenn Chambers, left, earned the highest score during the shoot and was recognized as the winner of the pro category and overall.

Adam Jones, a junior fisheries and wildlife major, posted the highest student score.

Shooting stations were sponsored by University and community groups, including the CAFNR Dean's Office, MFA, Inc., the School of Natural Resources, the CAFNR Office of Advancement and Bob Almony, Financial Planner.
