Greater Understanding of Wetland Ecology
The overall mission of the Wetland Ecology Center of Excellence (WECOE) is to increase our understanding of wetland ecosystems, the fish and wildlife populations that depend on them, and the strategies needed to effectively manage these resources.
Today's wildlife managers and private landowners, as well as future generations of profesional wetland managers, scientists and conversationists, need this knowledge and training. With our partners in state and federal government and the private sector, the center will advance our understanding of wetland habitats, waterfowl and other wildlife.
In this way, the center will ensure that Missouri's rich tradition of leadership in wetland wildlife science, education and application continues into the future.
Transferring Knowledge
A unique feature of the center will be the active support for public and private wetland managers.
This continues the rich tradition of collaboration between the Missouri Department of Conservation and the University of Missouri for a half-century.
Transfer of new wetland knowledge to wetland/waterfowl managers in the public and private sectors will be through training workshops, publications and consultations.
Funds from the endowment will support staff to act as a liaison between research and management, actively applying new knowledge to on-the-ground improvements in wetland conservation and management.
Supporting Students
The future of wetland ecosystem conservation depends on educating new professionals in wetland and waterfowl management.
Graduate students will enhance the research mission of WECOE while developing the knowledge and skills to be the state, national and international leaders of the future.
