Smallwood 2008 and Bioenergy and Wood Products Joint Conference, May 13-15, Madison, Wisc.
This year's theme is "Cutting Edge Technologies to Optimize Utilization of Smallwood and Woody Biomass." The objective of this conference is to provide state-of-the-art information on small-tree utilization and to foster peer-to-peer learning.
Enormous quantities of woody biomass are being generated from thinning operations, land clearing and hurricane disasters. These issues drive the need to create solutions for using low-value and waste wood. For more information contact Julie Lang, conferences@forestprod.org, at the Forest Products Society.
Missouri Woodland Owners Conference, June 20-21, 2008
The MU Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center in New Franklin will once again host the conference's Friday Field Day. Following lunch, attendees will visit a crime scene, "The Stolen Forest," and learn that even a university can be a victim of an unauthorized timber harvest. You will learn what you can do to prevent this from happening on your property and what can be done to rehabilitate these high-graded forests. Our other stop will take us to Missouri-Pacific Walnut up the road in Fayette for a mill tour where walnut, red oak and white oak are processed.
On Friday evening, woodland owners interested in learning about efforts to form a Missouri Woodland Owners Association are invited down to the conference hall.
Saturday's program is simply chuck-full of information. State Forester Lisa Allen will provide the latest update on efforts to revise the State Forestry Law, as well as other current forestry events. Amy Yambor from the American Tree Farm System will speak to issues emerging on the national scene and how they may impact Missouri Tree Farmers.
Steve Mahfood, currently the only in-state carbon aggregator, will have the latest developments from the Chicago Climate Exchange relating to carbon credits for managed forests. Always energetic Associate Professor Rose-Marie Muzika will update us on the health of Missouri's woodlands.
At this year's luncheon we will not only recognize the state's Outstanding Tree Farmer, but we will begin a new tradition of honoring the state's Logger of the Year.
The afternoon presentations kick off with Bob Massengale, one of Missouri's outstanding professional foresters, explaining how various wood products relate back to tree quality on the stump. Whether you live in Kirksville, Fulton or Mountain Grove, Professional Foresters Gary Oakely and Fred Crouse will give you the basics on selling your timber. The day will conclude with the most important session on planning your timber harvest. You will learn first-hand from the Regional Loggers of the Year how they plan and conduct successful harvests, and how you can help them meet your objectives.
For more information contact the Missouri Forest Products Association's Education Coordinator, Glenda Fry, 573-634-3252 or Glenda@moforest.org, or you can visit Missouri Forest Products Association. So, what are you waiting for? Fill out your registration form and mail it in today! Or better yet, register online.
But, most important of all, tell someone else! Help us make this year's conference the biggest and best ever!
2008 Walnut Council National Meeting, August 3-6, Columbia, Mo.
The Missouri Chapter of the Walnut Council is this year's host. More than 250 landowners from across the Midwest and Eastern U.S. are expected to converge on Central Missouri to learn the latest on growing black walnut and other fine hardwoods.
Field tours will show you how to evaluate soil suitability for growing walnut, evaluate trees, and thin forest stands and plantations. Indoor sessions will feature an evening with the experts, investing in carbon credits, growing and marketing cultivar nuts, and estate planning and conservation easements. For more information, contact Jerry Van Sambeek, jvansambeek@fs.us.fed, 573-875-5341 ext. 233, or Mark Coggeshall, coggeshallm@missouri.edu, 573-884-1777.
